Our roots
A legacy of faith,
a future of hope.
Honoring our past. Celebrating our present. Embracing our future.
A humble beginning · 1947
Tabernacle Church of God in Christ was organized in November 1947 at the home of Elder Eddie R. Driver Jr. and his wife, Sister Ina P. Driver. They were joined in this work by Brother and Sister Briggs Williams, Sister Marie Hunter, and Brother and Sister Booker Walker. Their shared vision, faith, and commitment laid the foundation for a lasting ministry.
A place to worship
After several meetings, the church was officially formed and incorporated. The young congregation began searching for a place to worship and found a modest garage at 5225 San Pedro Street. The building was secured for a monthly rent of $40.00. With the help of fellow members and Elder Driver’s tireless efforts, it was cleaned and remodeled for church use. Though simple, it was filled with faith, love, and the presence of God.
God’s blessings
The little edifice was warmly received by all who entered its doors. Faithful financial supporters, whose names are recorded on the church’s Roll of Honor, helped sustain the ministry. The first heating system was a wood heater, and the water supply came from a stand provided by the Sparkletts Water Company. These remain reminders of the church’s humble beginnings and God’s provision.
Our first service
The first service was held on February 1, the first Sunday in February, at 9:45 AM. The day included prayer, Sunday School, morning service, Y.P.W.W., and an evening service. It marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of worship, discipleship, and community.
A vision for a greater tomorrow
Elder Driver prayed and sought the Lord for the vacant lot on the corner of 55th and San Pedro Streets. Through faith, perseverance, trials, and triumphs, the church purchased the lot and built its present building from the ground up.
Expanding the ministry
Elder Driver’s vision continued as he prayed for a six-classroom education building and a kitchen with a dining room, each complete with an intercom system, to further the church’s ministry and outreach.
Continuing the legacy
Elder Driver’s vision for Tabernacle continued under the leadership of Elder Lewis Johnson from 1986 until 2013. Today, the church moves forward under Supt. Alfred R. Tillman, who remains committed to its rich history and to carrying its mission into the future.
A bright future
Tabernacle stands on a strong legacy, empowered by God’s grace, and looks forward to greater things to come.
Rooted in faith. Built by vision. Moving forward in purpose.
